Love, Culture and the Kitchen Sink

Country Available: Canada, USA
Love, Culture & the Kitchen Sink is a thought provoking, personal look at the lives of four intercultural couples. Candid interviews combined with intimate scenes of family gatherings, cultural celebrations and a colorful wedding, delve beneath the surface of mixed-culture relationships, and the joys and challenges they create.

Alex is from an East Indian culture and Maria is of Portuguese descent. They fell in love and married in a time when multicultural relationships were frowned upon and they have spent their lives rediscovering one another's heritage. At the age of 40, Alex decided to re-embrace his Muslim faith, leaving Maria to question her own beliefs and the future of her family.

Shireen and Jason are dealing with the complexities created by four cultures. Shireen is Alex and Maria's daughter so she has her East Indian and Portuguese heritage. Her husband, Jason has Polish and African American roots. Shireen and Jason now have a baby. Shireen's father expresses his desire to have his brand new grandson brought up as a Muslim. The couple is caught between the need to satisfy their parents and following their own ideals.

Mariko is combining her Caucasian-Japanese tradition with her partner Wert's North American Indian culture. Mariko struggles with her own cultural identity while discovering the peace and tranquillity of a new heritage.

Ben is Caucasian and Janet is Chinese. As they prepare for their wedding day, Ben discovers Asian traditions and family customs. It's a bit of a rocky road, as the couple often agrees to disagree. We follow every step of their preparations for their rich and complex Western/Asian wedding.

This emotionally charged documentary raises the universal question of cultural co-existence and whether love really does conquer all.
