The disapperance of an African rain forest - and how it is being recreated - is a story of hope for our planet, and also a lesson of sound economics for every country. In Tanzania, huge areas of rain forest were felled before and after Tanzania's independance in the 1960s. The balance of nature was swept aside in a race for riches. Today, the population is trying to re-establish the almost barren areas of former rain forest. Experiments show that trees planted 10 - 15 meters apart protect both the soil and the annual crops. It turns out that recreating the ecological balance is sound economics. |
