Museum Maestros

Country Available: USA

Gail and Barry Lord are obsessed with museums. As internationally acclaimed museum experts, they are leading a revolution in the cultural world. This husband and wife team is now jetsetting across the globe to consult with the world s top institutions, architects and exhibition designers to create and re-invent museums for the 21st century.

The Lord s personal experience as art critics and political activists in the 1960s and 70s provides the inspiration for their museum planning. In the last 25 years, these unlikely cultural heroes have been involved in more than 1,500 projects including contracts with the Louvre, the Tate, and the Guggenheim Bilbao.

Museum Maestros follows director John Bessai as the maestros take him behind the scenes to some of their current projects including the World Trade Center Memorial in New York City, the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.

By creating idea museums rather than stuff museums and making each a centre of activity rather than a building full of lifeless displays, they engage visitors and forge community. This talent is demonstrated by the Lord s involvement in the American Revolution Center outside Philadelphia and the Ellis Island Project, as well as massive cultural projects in the Saadiyat Island Cultural District of Abu Dhabi and Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

The Lords are energetic, thoughtful, and a breath of fresh air in the often stale world of museums. Their insight into how culture and identity are shaping museums stems from their own Canadian experience. In Museum Maestros you ll find them to be enlightening, inspiring, and always entertaining.
