Discovery of Dawn, The

Country Available: Canada
This program documents the causes, symptoms and effects of the eating disorders commonly afflicting today’s young adults. The information is organized around the plight of Dawn, an 18 year old survivor of anorexia nervosa whose struggle with the illness includes most of the feelings, symptoms and experiences that mark the onset and the pathology of eating disorders. Her testimony is supported by four other young women recovering from anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating. Dawn and her peers talk about what drove them into their struggles with food, what that struggle was like and what they did to survive.

Andie MacDowell, actress (Four Weddings and a Funeral; Michael) and former fashion model, makes a special guest appearance and shares her thoughts about body image, eating disorders and the cultural pressure to stay thin. She talks about the Barbie Doll Syndrome; Body Image; and the Real Beauty.
